More Stud Poker Games: Hurricane, Pig, Second Hand High and English Stud Poker

Variations of Stud Poker:

We offer you a chance to learn more stud poker games: Pig, Hurricane, English Stud Poker and Second Hand High.

Hurricane

Hurricane is two card stud, where players receive two cards, one face-up and one face-down. The first card is dealt face-down and is followed by a betting round. The second card is dealt face-up and the second betting round occurs. The cards are then exposed and the best hand wins. Obviously two card hands can only be a pair or a high card, so a Hurricane game played without any special features can be quite boring. To spice up the game, players can use High/Low format, wild cards, or even include a draw and an additional betting round in the end.

Pig

Pig is five card stud poker with a draw. Three face-down cards are initially dealt to each player followed by a betting round. Two face-up cards are then dealt one by one with a betting round following each deal. When each player has three face-down and two face-up cards and three betting rounds take place, players turn their up-cards face down and join it to their hands. After this each player draws a number of cards and discards a number of cards from his hand. At this stage, all cards are kept face-down, so other players do not know what cards are exchanged. This is followed by the final betting round and the showdown.

Second Hand High

Second Hand High is normally played as seven card stud poker, but actually this system is applicable to any poker game. Second Hand High does not change the game itself, so if it is played as seven card stud, all rules of seven card stud apply and the game proceeds as usual, but in the end, the pot is not won by the player with the best hand at the table, but by the player with the second best hand. If only one player remains at the table, he wins the pot automatically, without even showing his hand.

English Stud Poker

English Stud is dealt like standard seven card stud, with two cards down, four up, one down, but involves three drawing rounds. Two down and one up card are dealt normally at the beginning. A betting round follows. The fourth and the fifth cards are dealt face-up and are followed by betting rounds. After the third betting rounds, when players have two down and two up cards, the first draw occurs. If a player discards a face-up card, he receives the new card face-up, otherwise he receives it face-down. The draw is followed by a betting round. The remaining two cards are dealt the same way, following standard seven card stud dealing scheme and involving a draw after each card is dealt: up-card, betting round, draw, betting round; down-card, betting round, draw, betting round. So, English stud is played exactly like standard seven card stud, but with draw and additional betting rounds after the fifth, the sixth and the seventh cards.
